This is Jung Hae-Gu, the chairperson of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Republic of Korea has shown successful progress in the construction of a nation-state, condensed industrialization, and modernization of democratic development, resulting in a leap into an advanced country, at least on a quantitative level. At the same time, however, the modernization process has deepened the gap between hierarchical inequality and regional development, and now it has become a challenging task that can't be delayed any longer.

Furthermore, Korea is currently facing various future challenges, which include population problems due to aging and low birth rates, rapid changes due to the 4th Industrial Revolution, climate and environmental problems that threaten the foundation of human survival, and rapid changes in the international order, including the U.S.-China hegemony competition.

In this regard, the Republic of Korea is facing a very different era from the past. In the context of such a great transformation of the times, it is natural that our national paradigm should go beyond the past and to the future.

In response to the transition of the times and the subsequent changes in the national paradigm, the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, and 26 research institutes actively support national policies through research in the fields of Economy, humanity, and Social Sciences.
